Summer Term Newsletter
Edition 2, May 2009
This is only edition 2 of the Summer Term
Newsletter and it is already almost half term! A very
short half term that will have seen the SATs tests
completed. Only a few tests remain to be taken
through school before the end of SATs Week
celebration that all our fulltime attenders take part
in.

We regard all the SATs tests as an important part
of our assessment of your child's educational
achievement however, it is only the end of Key
Stage assessments that are reported to the Local
Authority and nationally. The assessments made on
our Foundation children and Key Stage 1 children
help us to plan for the next stage in their learning,
whilst the end of Key Stage 2 SATs test results are
used by the children's next school.

The attitude of all our children has been excellent
throughout the week. The school has been calm
and quiet and all our children, even the youngest
ones, have adapted to having playtimes and
lunchtimes disrupted. I am extremely proud of our
children and know they have tried their best
throughout the week.

Our free Breakfast Club for the Year 6 children has
proved very popular and every child has been at
school on time every day.

Please remember, if you wish to see me about
anything regarding your child or school, please call
in and see me or make an appointment through the
school reception.

INSET Days

School closes at the normal time next
Friday, May 22nd 2009, for the May Bank
Holiday Week. The first school day for
children after the week is Tuesday June 2nd
2009.

In September we will once again begin the
school year with two training days for
teachers and so the first school day for
children will be Monday September 7th
2009.

Community Room

Our Community Room has now been
designated as a Phase 3 Children's Centre.
The plans for offering services to parents of
children under
5 years of age in the local area are well
underway and already we are beginning to
think about the official opening. Do look out
for the official announcement that Anston
has its own Ryton Brook Children's Centre
and I hope to be able to update you about
the services we will be offering.

Attendance Matters

As you are aware, our school has been
placed in the category of Persistent
Absence this year and the attendance of
each child in school has been closely
monitored. I cannot overstate the
importance of good attendance in school
for your child's educational development
and yet we do still have a number of
children whose attendance is well below
school, local and national averages.

School is being supported in attendance
matters by the Local Authority and the
Locality Educational Welfare Officer
(EWO). The EWO, Chris Stafford, is
planning meetings with parents of some of
our children whose attendance is causing
concern; if you would like to request a
meeting yourself with Mr Stafford please
let me know.

May I also remind you that I am only able
to authorise up to 10 days in one school
year for a holiday to be taken in term time
and only if there are special reasons for
the request; please be aware that the
cost of a holiday is not classed as a
special reason.

I am unable to authorise any holiday
where your child's attendance is 95% or
below and not in the first two weeks of
the Autumn term.

There are other times when I am also
unable to authorise a leave of absence,
all the information you need is on the
leave of absence request form.
Anti-Bullying Award

I am very pleased to inform you that we have
achieved the Rotherham Authority Gold Standard
Award for Anti-Bullying.

We have been working towards the Award for just
over a year. This has involved a working party of
staff, children, parents and governors looking at
our policy and procedures regarding anti-bullying.

Our policy and procedures have all been updated
and the plan we have worked towards has been
taken by the Local Authority as a model of good
practice for other schools.

We are continuing our commitment to anti-bullying
by continuing to hold working party meetings and
introducing a Keep Safe Week later this term.
School Bank

Our School Bank for children is becoming
very popular; if you would like your child
to open an account please contact the
school office for more details.

Please note there will be no collection of
school bank money during SATs week.

Class Attendance

Winners of the most recent class
attendance awards are:

w/e 1st May 2009 Class 6

Well done children and keep up the
good work.
Key Stage 2 SATs 2010

I have been informed that the end of Key
Stage 2 SATs may be moved from May to June
next year.
